Meet Daryl Cowie

Hi. My name is Daryl Cowie, and this is my company.

My background is in Engineering, Product Management, and Product Marketing. When I made the transition from technical engineering to business leadership I found that I needed a stronger grounding in Business 101.

As I started to shift my focus from the technical aspects to the business side, I realized that I was surrounded by people who didn't understand the business. Each person I encountered seemed to feel that whatever function they worked in was the main business. People in the factory thought the business was manufacturing products. People in customer service felt the business was there to supply and support products and services requested by our customers. People in Engineering thought we were either in the business of bringing innovative new products to market, or providing system design, integration and commissioning services. And accross the board, very few people thought about why we were really there all that much.

This isn't good for companies. This isn't good for individuals. It wasn't good for me.

I want to change that...

Daryl Cowie, P.Eng

Daryl spent 12 years at a medium sized company that was aquired by one of the top 5 Fortune 500 companies a few years after he joined. During the years following the aquisition he saw the small company way of thinking and the big company way of thinking collide. It was during this transition that Daryl made his own transition from Technical Engineer to Department Manager to Product and Marketing Manager. During his tenure as Product Manager he saw his multi-million dollar product portfolio turn-around from historic decline to a steady, multi-year growth of over 25% per year. Daryl now does some marketing consulting, helping smaller companies bring products to markets. The result is an unbelievable education that he wants to share with everyone looking to understand why businesses behave the way they do.

A Human Being

Believe it or not, I have a few interests besides business management and engineering.

My family and I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and my biggest priority is them. In fact, the driving reason behind this internet business adventure stated with a desire to be more flexible with my time and physical location. My goal is to give that flexibility to my entire family.

A few of the things I like to do include

• Volleyball (playing and coaching)
• Snowboarding (my son is learning to ski, so I'll probably break out the sticks again at some point, but I've been using a board for several years now, so that should be interesting)
• Surfing (a little tough in Calgary, its a very long walk to the beach)
• Camping
• Drawing and Graphic Arts
• Playing the piano
• Our whole family is learning Spanish (mi español no es bueno todavía, pero soy feliz)
• and I always like watching a good episode of House (the cranky doctor, you know the one)
